Gets the job done. Oct 31, 2009 This product is meant for a portable device, however I am using it to replace my VCR which died. It records, but the quality is poor, but for $25.00 you get what you pay for. And yes, the remote sucks.
After exchanging the defective unit, I love this thing! Oct 28, 2009 What a great, inexpensive replacement for a VCR! We use it on a 19" TV and to play recordings on my laptop screen (after transferring files from memory card to PC), and we find the picture quality to be no worse than that of a VCR. Yes, it has several of the disadvantages mentioned by other users. But we can live with those given that this tiny thing fits in the palm of your hand, and an 8 GB SDHC memory card can record over 8 hours of TV programming or movies. I particularly like the way the "Play recording" command lists all of the available recordings, and that the file names give you the date and time that the recording was made. This gives us a quick and easy indication of what is what.
I think that there could be a quality control problem, so don't be surprised if a unit doesn't work when you get it. I first bought this from Amazon.com Oct 2009. It would not read or recognize any of the SD memory cards that I tried in it. I noticed that when I pushed and jogged the memory card around, it would read it for just a few seconds, and then stop again. Clearly a defective unit. I returned it to Amazon.com for a refund. Since Amazon no longer sells it, I bought one from another Amazon seller, and it worked flawlessly.
If you buy one, be sure to read all of the Amazon reviews. There were lots of great tips there that helped make better use of it (e.g. where and how to update the firmware).
Pretty Good Niche Product Oct 07, 2009 This is a product with a very small niche. If you want to record TV shows and do not want to own a DVR, a DVD recorder or a VCR, this is for you. I own it because: (1) I don't want to pay monthly DVR fees and (2) my toddler son would destroy any VCR and DVD recorder that he can reach. The V-Mate is small and can fit on top of my big CRT TV where it is out of his reach. (I will buy a flat screen when he is old enough not to destroy it too.)
The recording quality at highest resolution is not as good as VCR but is definitely watchable on a computer or CRT TV. I would not buy this if you want to create a video archive because the video quality is too low for that. The menus are extremely easy to navigate. If you can use a VCR, you can use a V-Mate. The remote control sensor on the V-Mate works but has a very narrow field. You practically have to be standing inches away for it to be very responsive. While recording at the highest resolution, video does not pass through to the TV from the V-Mate's output. This is not a problem for me because I hooked up the output of the V-Mate to video 3 on my TV's input optons. If I want to watch while it is recording, I just watch through my TV main cable input.
I find it very useful to record my son's favorite shows while he is not home.
Remote control sucks, color very flat. But still usable. Oct 02, 2009 The quality is definitely (well) below VHS level. Sometimes you can only tell if the quality is better or worse if you do side by side comparison. Not here. The color is unmistakably flat. The picture quality even at 640x480 is still not smooth on TV (somewhat digital looking). Looks little bit better on laptop monitor. I have not yet tried the video on tiny cell-phone monitor (but anything looks better on these tiny monitors).
At 320x240 the file size is about 500 MB for 1 hour. Given the low price and my less than professional needs, I'll keep it for now. But I would hesitate to recommend it to next person. I could not use to for important things like family video, weddings, baby's first steps, etc.
The remote control is REALLY finicky (almost unusable). I have to press every button few times (taking sometime more than 5 or 10 seconds per button). The problem is that 100% of operation is done by the remote (on/off, record, playback, settings, etc.).

P.S. I've done professional video editing before (weddings, instructional video, etc.).

Burn your money, it's faster Sep 15, 2009 The device arrived promptly and undamaged. That is all the good news.
After reading the product instructions I realized this device would not do what I wanted. I have several Sony semi-pro mini dv cameras with worn out tape drives. I am looking for a way to use them with an inexpensive PVR that records to AVC/H264 format which this one does not. I connected the device to my video system for the test run. It came on but would not respond to any command from the remote. It has no input method other than the remote. I tested the battery and it was dead. I bought a new battery and it sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. The remote is really cheaply made, without true buttons, and sometimes takes multiple tries to get a response. In a video shoot struggling to get your recorder on is a nightmare. The product pamphlet suggests going to a sandisk address online for firmware updates. They do not exist. The product is out of production and unsupported. Amazon authorized return for refund but save the headache and don't buy this one.
